Synopsis:
Zion Melak lives in a small village near Kaiserslautern (Germany). When she talks about her childhood in Eritrea today, it is above all a
very painful memory that comes to the fore. When she was a little girl, she was mutilated due to the ritual circumcision of the female genitals. She was deprived of her fundamental right to physical
integrity.
Every 11 seconds, a girl's genitals is cut off or injured in order to control her sexuality. Every day, 8,000 girls in Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Asia share this fate. But even in
Germany girls are at risk of being secretly mutilated. According to the WHO, 150,000 million women and girls are circumcised worldwide. Why is this done to women? What are the physical and
psychological consequences of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)?
The film gives a deep insight into the inhumane practice of female genital mutilation in a cinematic portrait about Zion Melak.
