Coffee is besides water the most popular drink in the world - and a popular merchandise. Only oil is traded more worldwide. The market is often unfair: the main beneficiaries are the multinational companies and coffee roasters in the northern hemisphere - but not the pickers. For one kilogram, they only get a few cents and therefore have to harvest up to 45 kilograms a day in order to live off their wages. The working conditions are tough and safety on the plantations is inadequate.
